On Dec 19, 2017–Jan 13, 2018 : Materials were distributed to students at all the 15 supported schools of Project Sangamam. These included Chappals, Umbrellas, Sports uniform and health kit.
On 24th Dec 2017 : Asha Chennai with support from the chapters at Frankfurt and Pittsburg have been constructing a new toilet complex at Koppampatti in Thoothukudi Dist of Tamilnadu. This was completed and was finally inaugurated on the Christmas Eve (24th Dec 2017).
Oct/Nov 2017 : Toilets at PUPS Kannigaiper, PUPS Katchur and PUPS Annanagar were repaired in Oct/Nov 2017 as part of Project Sugadharam.
On 8th Nov – 7th Dec 2017: Oral Assessments based on Pratham’s ASER survey were conducted at all the Asha Chennai supported government schools – over 70 of them spread across 5 districts.
On Nov 17th : Science exhibitions were held at Cluster level at all clusters in the Poondi block of Thiruvallur Dist on 17th Nov. All our supported schools also participated in these and several of them won prizes.
On Dec 26th and 27th : Teachers from all Asha Chennai supported projects attended training sessions over 2 days in Chennai. Maths training was held by training from Ramanujan museum and English training by local volunteers.
Aug/Sept 2017: Toilets at PUPS Gandhigram, PUPS Nemiliagaram and PUPS Yelappanaidu Pettai were repaired and made useable by Asha in Sept 2017 as part of Project Sugadharam.
Aug/Sep 2017:Project Sugadharam was extended to cover the construction and repair of toilets in three more schools we support at Koppampatti, Nagalapuram and Kaatu Sithaamboor. This will be funded by the Asha sister chapters at Pittsburg and Frankfurt. Construction of a new toilet at Koppampatti was started with the initial Bhumi Pooja and laying of the foundation.
Aug/Sep 2017: We undertake the repainting of black board annually for all our schools. We did that at all the 15 Project Sangamam schools in August/September of 2017.
On Oct 9th to Oct 13th : Eye Camp was conducted by Hyundai Glovis in partnership with Shankara Eye Hospital from Oct 9th to Oct 13th for children at all the 12 schools we support in Poondi Block of Thiruvallur District.
On Oct 9th to Oct 13th : Hyundai Glovis has setup a kitchen garden to improve the children’s nutrition at the PUPS Gandhigram school. Health kits were also distributed to the children.
30th sept to 2nd Oct 2017: Teacher training was conducted at Olcott Memorial school for teachers from all our projects over 3 days from Sept 30th to Oct 2nd.
Education and Sports materials were purchased for all the Project Sangamam schools. These were distributed to the 12 Poondi block schools supported by Hyundai Glovis on the 26th and 27th of July along with staff from Glovis. These were distributed to the 3 Ellapuram block Project Sangamam schools on August 1st. These included stationery materials, sports materials, Maths kits, mats, …
Hyundai Glovis sponsored sports uniforms for children at their 8 supported schools. These were distributed to the children in the 8 schools on June 22nd and 23rd. We also distributed these dresses to the children at Kannigaiper on July 1st.
Hyundai Glovis has been supporting 8 schools in Project Sangamam since 2014-15. On 15th June 2017 MOU was signed to continue the project in 2017-18. Hyundai Glovis has decided to support all 12 schools that we support in the Poondi block of Thiruvallur District. Asha’s annual teacher training programme, RightStart was held from May 24th to 28th. This included training in English and Maths. All teachers from Asha suppoted projects and some teachers from other partner organisations attended this 5 day event at IIT Madras.
As part of Project Sugadharam, a toilet complex was built for girls at the PUP School Thandalam. This was inaugurated by Hyundai Glovis’ MD, Joo Min on 5th April 2017.
Hyundai Steel approached Asha Chennai to work with the schools near their facility at Sengadu. Asha Chennai studied the area and submitted a proposal. This was approved and Hyundai Steel has decided to fund the project. This will be administered as part of Project Sangamam-Thiruvallur.
All the 4th and 5th standard children from the 11 schools in the Poondi block supported by Project Sangamam were taken for an excursion to Dakshina Chitra and Mahabalipuram in two batched on the 18th of March and 1st April. This was sponsored by Hyundai Glovis.
Asha India conference was held at Tamulpur, Assam on March 25th and 26th. Rajaram from Asha Chennai attended the conference.
Written assessments in English and Maths were conducted at all the Asha Chennai supported schools from Feb 14th to March 10th. It was conducted in 55 schools covering over 3300 children. Asha’s Support-A-Child(SAC) project provides scholarship to 130-140 students every year, covering students from class 1 to degree courses (B.A, B.Sc, B.B.A, B.C.A, etc). During our interaction at the time of disbursements, we often came across students and their parents expressing their inability to choose a course or a college and wanted some guidance. Gandhigram a poor tribal village where we support the government school was affected by the cyclone Vardha. Hyundai Glovis raised materials from their staff and company to aid these villagers.
Teacher training was held for three days from 28th to 30th December for teachers from all Asha Chennai projects.
Hyundai Glovis donated 10 used computers to Asha Chennai.These were donated to be given to the schools that we support through the Sangamam Kanini and other projects.
With support from Hyundai Glovis Asha Chennai has launched Project Sugadharam to build and repair toilets at the schools we support in Thiruvallur District.
Oral Assessments were conducted at all Project Sangamam and Project Pearl Schools in November 2016. The data from these assessments have also been analysed.
Blackboards at the Project Sangamam schools were repainted in Oct 2016. The blackboards need to repainted once or twice a year for them to be effective. At all out government school supporting project we take up this activity.
15th Sept 2016: Project Deepam that supports a computer centre at Besant Theosophical Higher Secondary School celebrated it first anniversary on 15th Sept 2016. This was also covered in the Adyar Talk.
12th Aug 2016: Materials were distributed to all the 14 rural schools supported as part of Project Sangamam. Of these Hyundai Glovis supports 8 of the schools. This was also covered in the 23rd Aug issue of The Hindu.
