Asha Chennai

Asha undertook the construction of 3 new toilet complexes and the repair of one at schools in Thiruvallur and Thoothukudi District. These were completed and inaugurated in June/July.

Asha Impressions, a competition showcasing the best projects done by students in the schools supported by Asha, was hosted by Amazon Chennai office on May 5th 2023.

Asha organised its annual teacher training program RightStart from 8th to 12th May in the IIT Madras campus. Over 120 teachers from all our various projects participated in the training program.

A number of schools supported by Asha celebrated their annual days in March and April of 2023. This was happening in full strength and a 3 year break due to Corona.

 Written assessments were conducted in all our supported schools in Feb 2023. It was successfully conducted at over 150 schools,

 Asha conducted excursions for 1160 children and 135 teachers from 45 schools at Thiruvallur, Thopthukudi and Thiruvannamalai districts.

IITM Pravartak and Asha started the sixth RTC at Kalugumalai in Thoothukudi district. The RTC was inaugurated on the 10th of Feb 2023.

RTCs completed one more term in Feb 2023. Four older RTCs in Thiruvallur and the two new ones in Thoothukudi are all functioning well.

Students from the 4 RTCs in Thiruvallur demonstrated their projects at the RTC Impressions event conducted on 6th Feb at the IITM Research Park.

Blackboards were painted at over 80 schools spread across our Sangamam, Pearl and Thulasi project areas.

Staff from all Asha Chennai projects went for excursions in Dec 2022. Sangamam Rajatalab teachers went to Rameswaram and staff from rest of the Tamilnadu projects went to Thiruvananthapuram.

All the Asha Chennai computer teachers from Tamilnadu and UP came to Thiruvallur for 3 days from Dec 20th to Dec 22nd 2022 for training. The function was a success,

Asha Chennai undertook the repair of 3 tiled-roof buildings at three schools in Thiruvallur District supported by Project Sangamam. These were carried out between Nov 2022 and Jan 2023.

There were photographing sessions at our RTCs by professional photographers to take good quality photos for the IIT-Madras calendar. See the photos!

Every year we augment what is provided by the government to the schools by giving some more materials. We distributed stationery materials  and mats to all schools in Tamilnadu across all our projects in early to mid-Nov.

Report based on detailed discussions with the Head-mistress, Asha teacher and a bunch of students at 4 supported schools in Thiruvallur. Will help understand the background of the students and the challenges at these schools.

Trainer Ms. Meena Suresh and Ms. Purva Bhatter travelled to our project sites for projects Sangamam, Thulasi and Pearl to train the teachers in Maths and Science in the first half of Oct 2022.

 Toilet repair work was taken up at the two schools in Old Thirupatchur and Kosavanpalayam in August/Sept 2022 and completed. New toilet construction is also going on at Gandhigram.

After opening 4 RTCs in Thiruvallur district we have opened a new RTC in Kayathar, Thoothukudi District. This started operating in Oct 2022 and inauguration function was held on Oct 10th 2022.

Amazon started its support for Asha under its Amazon Future Engineer (AFE) program. Along with the start of our usual support for the schools, we also started new AFE initiatives.

Ford India donated 175 used laptops to Asha Chennai to be used for our charitable activities. We distributed these laptops to over 70 schools and centres.

The first two RTCs have completed one 6-month semester and two new RTCs have also started. Here is a report on their functioning over the last 6 months.

Amazon has selected Asha as a partner for its Amazon Future Engineer program. Under this partnership Amazon will support Asha’s CS education program at 100 schools. Asha will also implement Amazon’s Explore and Class Chats programmes.

Disha an NGO donated 16 laptops that they received from Ford to schools identified by Asha.
