Asha Chennai has been sending computer teachers to over 50 schools spread across Tamilnadu. These teachers teach the children computer science as well as use innovative contents on the computers to teach children English and Maths. As a part of the computer science education, we teacher children in 4th and 5th stds OpenOffice (documents, spreadsheets and presentations). We teach 6th to 8th std children the Internet as well as programming using Blockly and Scratch.
Computer science is best learnt through working on a project. Children from 4th and 5th std work on a presentation on a topic of their choice. Similarly children from 7th and 8th std work on a programming project in Scratch. They work on the project for 2 to 3 months starting in January. By April we received over a 100 presentations from about 40 schools and 12 Scratch projects from 3 middle schools. They totally exceeded our expectations in terms of their quality. We finally selected 10 presentations and 4 Scratch projects to present their work in front of a team of judges.
